Flooring Trends - 2013

2013 Color trends (while not completely letting go of those nice clean, warm tones) are getting bigger and brighter! If you thought that bright colors were something left to wall-to-wall carpet or accent area rugs, you wouldn't be alone.

Whether it is with wood flooring or accent rugs, bold color is back. Check out what Bauwerk Parquet and Zurich designer Virginia Maissen have come up with:

While this might not be for everyone, just think about the possibilities this starts to open up. Wood flooring doesn't have to just be wood, it can be anything you want. When was the last time your dreamed of having white carpets and then laughed at the idea of it?

Well, now you can have it all when it comes to your wood.

So, yes, carpeting is making a (slow) come back and this is due, in part, to the explosion of color + texture. It's true that wood and tile flooring can give us texture, but it's not the luxurious kind that you can feel and see.

There nothing quite like getting home after a long day, kicking off your shoes, and feeling the warmth and relief of a quality carpet.

2013 recognizes the return of plush luxury under our feet, warming our living spaces with color, pattern, and texture.

Other flooring trends include tile, specifically, large format floor tiles (which, incidentally, are being used for wallpaper projects too). Large format tiles are an interesting addition to the clean spa or industrial look that is still alive and well in today's flooring trends.

This is the largest growing trend and the there is no projected slow down in the forecast. Our options in eco friendly products continue to grow, and this includes carpeting. There is now eco and human-friendly carpeting that is...recyclable at no cost to the consumer! FLOR has created versatile, luxurious, and renewable carpeting.

With these tiled carpet squares you can choose to go wall-to-wall or stick to fun accent pieces that you can be endlessly creative with.  The carpet is created with as little environmental impact as possible and meet low-VOC(volatile organic compounds) standards and best of all, it's recyclable.
Other great environmental flooring products still include:
  • Bamboo
  • Cork
  • Rubber Flooring
  • Coconut Timber

Favorite new trend for 2013... Wine Barrel Flooring

As this type of flooring requires turning old wine barrels into usable pieces of flooring, it is a longer process but the results are intriguing, stylish, amazing, and oozing with the warmth of a fine red wine. While dealers for this type of flooring are rare, BC is lucky to have Blue Grouse Wine Cellars in Vancouver - be sure to check them out! This flooring option gets a check mark in style, eco-friendly, and luxury and is definitely my pick for 2013.
